5G commercial rollouts are in full string and every industry is gearing up to gain a head start in the 5G era. To accelerate the adoption of 5G technology in Taiwan, ORing Industrial Networking has donated its latest IIoT (Industrial IoT) products to National Formosa University to assist with the school's research projects, in the hope of making a positive contribution to Taiwan's 5G smart manufacturing.
ORing Industrial Networking, National Formosa University's Smart Machinery and Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center, and Chunghwa Telecom signed a MoU at National Formosa University on January 13, 2011, asserting their joint commitment to developing 5G smart manufacturing solutions to help Taiwanese industries strengthen their competitiveness and global presence. On this ceremony, ORing donated its 5G edge gateway, sensor gateway, and PaaS cloud platform powered by Inductive Automation's Ignition SCADA software which will be used in the university's research projects.
The ORing PasS cloud platform offers a robust and easy-to-use management and control platform for all connected devices. Users can have a variety of devices connected such as smart street lights, robotic arms, and touch displays via ORing's IIoT gateways. The devices can be easily connected to the cloud using standard MQTT or CoAP protocols, allowing users to control these devices remotely. In addition, they can monitor and track a large number of IoT devices easily. As the latest status of the devices will be stored on the cloud, users can keep an eye on the devices at all times even if the devices are disconnected. Data from the connected devices, regardless of the scale of the deployment, can be collected and analyzed. Besides using a rule engine to process data, users can also customize the rules to trigger events automatically, thus creating an intelligent IoT network. Last but not the least, ORing's PaaS provides several RESTful APIs to streamline the integration of applications.
This partnership will capitalize on Chunghwa Telecom's private 5G network, big data analytics, VR-based enterprise applications, and IoT platform. National Formosa University's Smart Machinery and Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center will use its expertise to integrate different vendors' CNC devices with ORing's IoT gateway to monitor devices, analyze data, and create AI models, while using AR/VR tools to facilitate equipment maintenance, thus providing a comprehensive 5G smart manufacturing solution. By providing a solution ranging from sensors to private clouds, the project aims to help industries predict device failure, improve the agility of production lines, and optimize production capacity. The ultimate goal is to build and replicate 5G smart manufacturing trial sites and demonstrations to industrial customers and promote 5G smart manufacturing in domestic and international markets through customized services and technology transfer.
Founded in 2005, ORing Industrial Networking specializes in developing network communications products for industrial applications. Today, ORing offers an array of products including Ethernet switches, wireless routers and APs, and 5G industrial gateways for factory automation, railway, transport, power, renewable energy, and many other markets. National Formosa University's Smart Machinery and Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center has been engaged in precision machining and smart manufacturing for 15 years and has developed several commercialized and modularized systems which have been adopted by dozens of companies. Chunghwa Telecom is the first telecom in Taiwan to obtain 5G licenses and roll out 5G services. The industry-university-government partnership is believed to accelerate the development of 5G smart manufacturing in Taiwan.
