Ethernet technology is gaining ground in industrial automation as an increasing number of enterprises upgrade their existing networks to IP systems in their factories. A variety of industrial protocols for industrial automation applications has thus been developed to allow for integration between their legacy serial devices and IP systems. Among them is the EtherNet/IP protocol created by Rockwell and managed by ODVA , a global trade and standards development organization. As one of ODVS’s 300 corporate members, ORing has launched several EtherNet/IP-ready industrial Ethernet switches in its 9000 family to simplify automation and process control.

EtherNet/IP uses CIP (Common Industrial Protocol) to manage the connection between various automation devices such as robots, PLCs, sensors, CNCs, and other industrial machines over Ethernet networks. Typically, EtherNet/IP defines a framework for implementing network protocols in seven layers, including physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation, and application. CIP is the application layer protocol which uses objects to describe the structure, operation, and functionality of devices, allowing the user to send control data related to I/O devices and other information such as configuration parameters and diagnostics.

Using CIP in EtherNet/IP brings many benefits to users. First of all, it enables smooth integration of I/O control, device configuration, and data collection. Information can be transmitted seamlessly across multiple networks. Secondly, it allows the user to implement multi-layer networks without adding bridges and proxies, which will result in higher costs and complexity. Thirdly, users can choose the products that suit their needs without worrying about vendor lock-in, while ensuring competitive prices and low integration cost.

ORing’s EtherNet/IP-enabled 9000 series* are managed Ethernet switches which come in a variety of form factors such as DIN-rail, wall-mounting, and card-type to meet different installation needs. To ensure robust and reliable connections in harsh industrial environments, the 9000 series switches support a wide operating temperature range from as low as -40 to as high as 75°C. Some models are compliant with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 standards to meet the requirements of power substations and rolling stocks. With completely support of Ethernet redundancy protocols such as ORing’s proprietary O-Ring technology and MSTP, the switches can protect your mission-critical data from network interruptions or temporary malfunctions with fast recovery time.
