Following the success of the railway seminar held in late September, ORing has struck while the iron is hot with the launch of a new managed Industrial Ethernet switch designed for rolling stock applications. The new offering is especially suitable for old trains as it provides two 2-wire Ethernet extender ports to enable a 100Mbps Ethernet IP network using 2-wire cables commonly used in existing train infrastructure.

The number of connector pins in a coupler on an old train is restricted, usually only two wires available for handling IP communications. With limited cabling space, deploying an IP-based train backbone is very challenging. This is where the TPS-B3082ET-M12-BP1comes into play as it supports 2-wire Ethernet technology. With two Ethernet extender ports that span a 10/100 network over 2-wire 24AWG cables up to 200m (650 feet) and over CAT5e cables up to 300m (980 feet), the switch is ideal for connecting individual network devices or between carriages in old train infrastructure where new cabling is difficult and costly, hence protecting customers’ existing investment. The Ethernet extender ports also integrate bypass technology to ensure uninterrupted data transmission in spite of single-point power failure in daisy chain topology or multi-point power failures in ring topology.

Designed to work in harsh environments of temperature extremes, humidity, and vibration, the switch provides a wide operating temperature ranging from -40°C to +70°C, along with EN50155 compliance and vibration-proof M12 connectors for robust and reliable connections. The switch is an ideal choice for system integrators in search of cost-effective solutions for railway applications.

As on-board switches are connected to a variety of network devices such as IP cameras and IP phones, the Ethernet ports of the TPS-B3082ET-M12-BP1can transmit not only data but also power to the connected network devices since they support IEEE802.3af PoE standard. Each port can provide up to 15.4 Watts power on the Ethernet cables along with data, eliminating the need for additional power cables and nearby power outlets. Apart from more simplified and cost-effective installation, but also enhances the flexibility and scalability of on-board networks. The switch also supports PoE power on delay function. Usually, when multiple PoE devices are connected to the switch, simultaneous power-on of these devices may result in an overload of the switch power supply, triggering the power supply overload protection. With PoE power on delay function, this problem can be avoided as users can postpone the port to feed power to the PD for a period of time when the switch is booted up. This function also eliminates video streaming traffic jam.
