Penang is a state located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, comprising of an island and a strip of land on the mainland. The state's capital, George Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich history, diverse culture, and mouth-watering cuisine, making Penang is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. Therefore, IP surveillance is crucial in this city to keep both residents and visitors safe and networking devices play a key role in IP surveillance systems as they are responsible for providing the connectivity and bandwidth for transmitting surveillance data to the remote control center.
However, IP surveillance in Penang City presents several challenges that need to be addressed for an effective security system. Firstly, the tropical climate characterized by high temperatures and humidity presents a significant challenge for surveillance equipment. The surveillance system needs to withstand high temperatures and humidity and operate reliably in harsh environments. Secondly, the high inflation has boosted the cost of deploying IP surveillance systems across the city. Keeping the cost under the budget is a major requirement for the client. Furthermore, as transmitting surveillance images and video requires a lot of bandwidth, Gigabit uplinks are a must.
After thorough planning, the client decided to adopt ORing’s networking solution to connect the IP surveillance system in the city given the reliability and long lifecycle offered by ORings’ products.

Solution
Networking is the core of an effective IP surveillance system. Therefore, the client installed ORing’s IPS-3082GC-AT and IES-3073GC industrial Ethernet switches to connect the IP cameras. Both are equipped with industrial-grade design including a wide operating temperature range, making them suitable for outdoor deployment in harsh weather conditions. The PoE function of the IPS-3082GC-AT allows for the seamless integration of IP cameras and other devices without the need for additional power sources, thus ensuring the cost is kept within the budget. As both switches come with Gigabit ports, large amounts of video data can be transmitted quickly and efficiently without delays or data loss.
Network redundancy is another reason the client chose these switches which support a range of Ethernet redundancy protocols such as RSTP and ORing’s proprietary network redundancy technology O-Ring and O-Chain to minimize network downtime. Furthermore, both switches feature a redundant power input design with reverse polarity protection, ensuring continuous power supply to critical applications.
Thanks to ORing’s reliable and cost-effective solution, the client successfully improved network reliability, minimized network downtime, and ensured seamless transmission of IP surveillance data.
