Solution
Train services are indispensable in Taiwan as a huge number of Taiwanese people commute to work by train every day. However, many local trains are unable to meet modern days' requirements due to capacity limit and unfriendly design. Therefore, Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) has upgraded its train system by introducing a new commuter train, the EMU3000 train, which features more room for wheelchairs and bicycles as well as specially designed seats for pregnant women and elderly passengers.
Besides making the commute more enjoyable, TRA also places a high focus on passenger security, especially after the Puyuma Express train derailment in 2018. Hence, uninterrupted data communication between control center and on-board systems such as the IP cameras is a top priority. To build a network capable of providing fast and reliable connections while withstanding severe shocks and vibrations, TRA has selected ORing's industrial Ethernet switches and wireless routers for this project.
According to TRA's plan, the train is divided into two network systems, including the CCTV system and intercom system. Each uses separate backbone architecture and operates independently to avoid interference of data from each system. One to two IP cameras and one NVR will be installed in each train carriage, all connected to an ORing industrial Ethernet switch which provides power to the devices over existing Ethernet cables through its PoE ports. Another switch is connected to the PIS to provide information to passengers and enable intercom and inter-phone communication. Both switches are connected to ORing's 4G LTE plus IEEE802.11n/ac wireless router in the carriage to provide mobile Internet. Besides allowing passengers to access the Internet through their mobile devices, the router also enables TRA staff to view IP camera footages or manage in-vehicle systems remotely.
One of the main reasons that TRA selects ORing's solution is because of its network redundancy technology such as hardware bypass. This technology ensures reliable and uninterrupted connections of inline network devices when any of the devices encounter hardware failure such as power outage because the network traffic will bypass the inactive device and continue on to other active devices when one of the devices is unavailable. The combination of hardware bypass and port trunk, ORing's proprietary network redundancy technology, provides TRA with consolidated protection when device and links break down.
Another advantage of ORing's solution is the dial code function which enables onsite staff to quickly confirm and adjust the IP address of a device by changing the numbers on the switch, significantly simplifying network management. TRA can use the time saved to focus on mission-critical operation. In addition, the staff can use port trunk functions to achieve link redundancy. The WLAN network can also be divided into different groups with different VLAN tags to prevent passengers from accessing on-board equipment when accessing the network via their mobile devices. ORing's network redundancy technology and advanced features help TRA provide a safe and pleasant train journey for passengers and bike commuters.
