In light with the Taiwanese central government’s effort to cut down carbon emission and promote smart cities, the Taoyuan City government has initiated a smart city project, starting from make the street lights smarter. As a leading IIoT solution provider, ORing is pleased to be engaged in this project, helping its customer fulfill the government’s requirements with its smart lighting controllers.
This project, which will last 15 years, is expected to save the government a total of NT$2.3 billion in electricity costs. The government plans to turn 162,000 existing street lights in the city into smart street lights during the first year. Apart from reductions in electricity costs and improvements in energy efficiency, this project will also benefit 5G development, thus facilitating the development of smart cities. In this project, the Taoyuan City government has adopted ORing’s smart lighting controllers to monitor, control, and manage the street lights remotely and effectively.
Supporting low-power ZigBee mesh or Lora tree technologies, ORing’s smart lighting controllers connect to LED lamps through standard NEMA sockets (ANSI C136.41). Compliant with the international DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) dimming control standard, the smart lighting controllers can increase illumination efficiency as the administrator can choose between different levels of light output and obtain lighting data. The controllers are equipped with automatic sensing technology which will dim with sunrise/sunset time or based on the analysis of data. When there is something wrong with the voltage, current, driver, or device, ORing’s smart lighting controllers will detect the fault automatically, so the administrator can troubleshoot as soon as possible.
With ORing’s smart lighting solution, the Taoyuan City government is able to reduce the electricity costs to NT$66 million from NT$219 million, slash 60,000 tons of carbon emissions, shorten troubleshooting time from 48 hours to 24 hours, and achieving 99.7% of % lumen maintenance. The smart street lights will also be equipped with 5G cells in the future, laying a solid foundation for smart city infrastructure.
“We are glad to provide our expertise, which is demonstrated through our IIoT solutions, in the Taoyuan City government’s smart lighting project,” said Angus Shih, founder, Chief Technology Officer and Sales & Technical Leader at ORing. “Smart street lighting is a key cornerstone for building a smart city. Our smart lighting controllers will make Taoyuan City the role model of smart city projects in Taiwan.”
