Kaohsiung City manages a large number of public streetlights, making efficient operation and maintenance a significant challenge. Traditional street lighting systems often involve high energy consumption, costly maintenance, and time-consuming fault detection and repair, while relying heavily on manual inspections and reports to identify problems.
To improve operational efficiency and reduce energy consumption, the Kaohsiung City Government initiated a smart street lighting project. In addition to upgrading conventional lights to energy-efficient LED lighting, the project aimed to introduce intelligent control and remote management capabilities to monitor streetlight status in real time, accelerate fault response, and streamline maintenance, creating a safer, more energy-efficient, and smarter urban lighting environment.
Plagued by the high maintenance costs, huge repair efforts, and high power consumption of street lights, the Kaohsiung government in Taiwan decided to replace them with smart street lights so they can be managed in a more efficient and cost effective way. Besides changing to more power-efficient LED lights, the government also wanted to install smart light controllers to enhance management efficiency and speed up repair and maintenance work, thus improving public safety at night.
To ensure reliable operation of the smart street lights, the government has adopted ORing’s OL-N2T5GPA1-NBG-UR smart light controller featuring LPWAN (Low-Power Wide-Area Network) technology. One reasons that the government chose this light controller is because of its performance recognized by the Level 2 Certification awarded by Taiwan’s TAICS (Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards), meaning it has met the security requirements for commercial use. Another reason is its versatile management functions and universal compatibility with all NEMA type LED luminaires since it comes with a standardized connector.
The OL-N2T5GPA1-NBG-UR smart light controller installed on every street light uses NB-IoT technology to transmit the status data of the street lights to the control center. It can monitor several electrical parameters in real time and alert the system automatically when any lights fail to work properly so the staff can fix the problems immediately, thus significantly improving maintenance efficiency. The failure data will be sent to the cloud at the same time where the staff can access the data via laptops or smartphones when they are not on site. The staff can switch lights on and off or dim lights remotely or by schedule while optimizing the power efficiency of the lights, dramatically enhancing management efficiency. The controller also comes with a G-sensor to detect tilt and will send an alarm to the control center in the case of damage.
After the installation of ORing’s OL-N2T5GPA1-NBG-UR smart light controllers, the number of maintenance cases reported dropped by 6,000 compared to the same period of time last year. The number of cases reported even dropped by 30% year on year in July and August during the typhoon season. Maintenance efficiency also increases dramatically as maintenance time is reduced from two days to 22 hours.

The Taoyuan Aerotropolis is a large-scale urban development project surrounding Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, designed to create a modern hub integrating logistics, industry, and residential development. As part of its vision to build a smarter, greener, and more livable city, the project incorporates a wide range of smart city and IoT technologies into its infrastructure. One of the key initiatives in the initial phase was the deployment of 6,000 smart streetlights.
To efficiently manage such a large-scale lighting network, the Taoyuan City Government required an intelligent solution that could enable remote monitoring and control, centralized management, energy monitoring, and rapid fault detection, while ensuring reliable operation in outdoor environments.
Claimed to be the largest infrastructure project in Taiwan’s history, the Taoyuan Aerotropolis is a massive urban development project at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in Taoyuan City. The project will create a modern industrial logistics center, development zone, and a modern urban residential neighborhood surrounding the airport. Once the Aerotropolis is completed, it will generate annual revenues of around US$ 74 billion and increase the airport’s passenger capacity from around 40 million annual passengers to about 60 million. Positioned to be a gate to the world, the Aerotropolis will adopt a variety of smart and IoT technologies to provide a more livable environment. The initial phase of the project involves the installation of 6000 smart street lights in the area.
To help the Taoyuan City government monitor, control, and manage the street lights remotely and effectively, ORing has installed smart lighting controllers for these streets lights. Supporting low-power ZigBee mesh or Lora tree technologies, ORing's smart lighting controllers connect LED lamps through standard NEMA sockets (ANSI C136.41), which is compliant with the international DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) dimming control standard.
This function enhances LED lighting efficiency as the administrator can choose between different levels of light output and obtain lighting data. The controllers are equipped with automatic sensing technology which will dim with sunrise/sunset time or based on the analysis of data. When there is something wrong with the voltage, current, driver, or device, ORing’s smart lighting controllers will detect the fault automatically, so the administrator can troubleshoot as soon as possible. The lighting controller can be easily managed through ORing’s MagiCITY platform which integrates all device controls such as smart lighting, sensor data loggers, smart meters, and smart trackers in one interface to provide maximum ease of management.
With ORing's smart lighting solution, the Taoyuan City government not only enhances management, maintenance, and troubleshooting efficiency significantly, they can also keep track of energy consumption of street lights. ORing has helped the government move one step closer to the goal of realizing a smart and green city.

Project Name: Highway Solar Street Light Control
Products Deployed: ORing Street Light Controller
As part of its efforts to improve highway lighting infrastructure, a solar-powered street lighting system was deployed along a highway in Panama. Compared with conventional streetlights, solar lighting provides a more sustainable solution by utilizing renewable energy while reducing dependence on the power grid.
However, managing solar streetlights across a large outdoor area presents several challenges, including limited solar energy during unfavorable weather, difficulty in monitoring power conditions, and time-consuming fault detection and maintenance. To ensure reliable and energy-efficient operation, the project required an intelligent lighting solution capable of remote monitoring and control, smart power management, automatic dimming, and real-time fault detection.
The system also needed to withstand harsh outdoor environments while maintaining sufficient illumination under different weather and power conditions.
ORing provided the customer with a complete solution for the customer including a lighting controller, a remote control module, a power monitoring module, and a smart management platform. ORing's smart lighting controllers are connected to the LED lights along the highway via standard NEMA sockets.
The controllers support both 0-10 V lighting and DALI dimming, allowing the administrator to choose the light level based on the environmental conditions in that moment. In addition, administrators can easily access real-time data of solar lights, such as voltage, current, and power of solar panels and cells, on LoRa/Zigbee networks, while controlling the lights remotely.
The smart lighting controllers monitor the voltage of the solar cells automatically to keep administrators aware of the power level and adjust the lights accordingly. In rainy days, the lights will be switched to power-saving mode to provide minimum illumination. Lights can also be turned on and off or dimmed at specific times such as sunrise, sunset, and any predesignated periods to save power.
The intelligent failure detection function will identify any failure on the network (such as lamp failure, segment failure, or accident on a pole) immediately so the administrator can dispatch maintenance staff to repair and reduce lamp downtime.
